Valve body material should follow the water, not the budget. Ductile iron suits most municipal and building systems; where the supply is brackish, recycled or drawn from a borehole with high chloride, bronze or stainless internals last considerably longer. On a mining site where the fire main shares a source with process water, this decision is the difference between a valve that opens in five years and one that does not.

Supervision is the part most often value-engineered out and most often regretted. A closed valve is the single most common reason a sprinkler system fails to operate, which is why tamper switches on every control valve are worth more than an upgrade in valve body material.

Pressure class has to suit the standing pressure at the valve position, not the pump outlet. In tall buildings and on mining sites with long vertical runs, the lower zones see pressures that a 175 psi body will not hold.
