A cone topper turns a cone that only says keep away into one that says what to do. On a works site that difference reduces the number of drivers who stop to ask, and on a lane closure it is what moves traffic across rather than slowing it to a crawl at the taper. For the cost of the plate it is the cheapest improvement available to a works crew.

Fit is the detail that gets overlooked. Toppers are moulded to suit a particular cone diameter and taper, and a plate ordered separately from the cones often arrives loose enough to blow off or tight enough to split.
